Around the NFC South
By Pat Yasinskas
Time for a run through the top headlines from around the division.
In a radio interview, former New York Giants defensive end Osi Umenyiora said he wants to play for the Falcons. The team also wants him because it needs a pass-rusher. If the two sides can agree on contract terms, Umenyiora could be part of Atlanta’s roster soon.
Coach Ron Rivera said he plans to be smarter with how he uses veteran receiver Steve Smith. Rivera said he plans to give Smith more practice time off. Smith hasn’t shown any signs of slowing down, but the Panthers would be wise to try to keep him as fresh as possible.
NEW ORLEANS SAINTS
Former Tulane quarterback Ryan Griffin recently worked out for the Saints. With Chase Daniel gone, the Saints are looking for a backup. Adding Griffin would make some sense. He’s familiar with the Saints' offense because Tulane coach Curtis Johnson is a former Saints receivers coach and uses many of the same plays and concepts.
TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS
Coach Greg Schiano said he took last year’s struggles in the defensive backfield personally. That’s because Schiano is a former defensive backs coach. He now has a new secondary coach, a new safety in Dashon Goldson and it’s pretty obvious that, one way or another, some new cornerbacks will be coming soon.
