NFC South evening update
By Pat Yasinskas
Before I cut out to take the next few days off (I’ll be back at it Monday, maybe even sooner if something major happens) let’s run through some odds and ends from around the division. And please continue to check the blog while I'm out because our editors will be posting roundups as well as any relevant videos.
Nothing has happened on the Osi Umenyiora front. As far as I’ve been able to gather, the defensive end still is someone the Falcons want, but they haven’t gotten around to finalizing a contract.
Mark Bradley has a fine tribute to retired center Todd McClure. As Bradley points out, McClure was more than a solid player. He was an excellent quote and a go-to-guy for the media, which is much appreciated.
A bill to help finance renovations for Bank of America Stadium won approval from the North Carolina House and could reach the floor later this week. There still is a long way to go on this as the Panthers, the state and Charlotte officials try to get everything in line.
NEW ORLEANS SAINTS
Mike Triplett writes that it would require a leap of faith for the Saints to take a shot on LSU’s Barkevious Mingo. The Saints have a strong need for a pass-rusher and Mingo has all the measurables. But he hasn’t put a lot of production on the field. Still, the potential is there for him to be as prolific as any pass-rusher in this draft.
TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS
The Bucs have turned quiet in free agency since making a splash with safety Dashon Goldson. Mark Cook suggests some veterans the Bucs could sign at defensive tackle, defensive end and cornerback. But I’m not so sure the Bucs are sold on any of the remaining big names.
