Comparing Mingo and Jones

By Pat Yasinskas

LSU defensive end/linebacker Barkevious Mingo and Georgia outside linebacker Jarvis Jones are getting tied to the New Orleans Saints in a lot of mock drafts

Let’s turn to ESPN Stats & Information for a by-the-numbers comparison of the two.

The one knock on Mingo is that he’s a workout wonder and his college production wasn’t that great. Mingo only had 4.5 sacks last season. But it’s worth looking at another category to get an idea of how good Mingo can be as a pro.

He recorded 28 total pressures (hurries and knockdowns), which tied him for second in the SEC. With that kind of pressure, combined with Mingo’s wingspan and leaping ability, he should be able to knock down some passes.

But Jones also can bring pressure. Jones led the SEC with 31 pressures last season. Mingo and Jones also fared well in quarterback hurries (defined as a play where the quarterback was flushed out of the pocket or hurried his throw due to pressure). They recorded more than any other draft-eligible prospect. Jones had 15 and Mingo had 13.

Jones had a huge impact when used as a blitzer. He had seven sacks when Georgia sent five or more pass-rushers.

ESPN Stats & Information also has a unique category. According to its research, Jones used finesse (speed, spin or twist) moves on 11 of his 14.5 sacks last season to lead the nation.
