Coordinator endorses Josh Freeman
By Pat Yasinskas
On several occasions this offseason, Tampa Bay Buccaneers coach Greg Schiano has had the chance to give quarterback Josh Freeman a ringing endorsement. But no matter how he’s tried to phrase it, Schiano always has seemed to come up a little short.
Maybe Schiano should take a lesson from his offensive coordinator.
“Josh Freeman is our quarterback, and he's a heck of a player,” Mike Sullivan said. “While there were some disappointments at times last year, whether it was a decision on a ball that was intercepted or just some inconsistencies -- you can’t take away the numbers that he put up -- the franchise records offensively. I think he is so much more comfortable with what we are doing right now having had that experience.”
I think Sullivan’s approach is the best route for the Bucs. Freeman succeeding represents their best chance of winning. Schiano’s waffling and the drafting of quarterback Mike Glennon have put some added pressure on Freeman. He already is facing enough pressure as he enters a contract year that’s going to determine whether or not his long-term future is in Tampa Bay.
The Bucs need to do what Sullivan did -- throw their full support behind Freeman and give him a fair shot at succeeding.
