Another step in Ryan Kalil's comeback
By Pat Yasinskas
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – While Carolina running back Jonathan Stewart and linebacker Jon Beason remain sidelined, another key player coming off a major injury passed a big mile post Sunday.
Pro Bowl center Ryan Kalil, who missed most of last season and had Lisfranc foot surgery, went through the first padded practice of training camp.
“We put it through the full test,’’ Kalil said. “It held up great. It felt good to be out there hitting again and being around the guys.’’
Kalil missed the final 11 games of last season while dealing with the first serious injury he has had at any level of football.
“It was really hard,’’ Kalil said. “You play a long time without ever having an injury and, I don’t want to say you think you’re invincible, but you sort of forget that’s a part of the game. Now, when I’m reading about guys getting hurt and going on injured reserve it kind of hits home more than it did in years past. I feel more now for anyone that I see getting hurt, and I have a new appreciation that I’m healthy again.’’
