Charles Godfrey's magic number is 8
By Pat Yasinskas
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – A lot of NFL players are hesitant to ever publicly state their individual goals for a season. Carolina safety Charles Godfrey isn’t one of them.
Godfrey has a very specific goal in mind for the upcoming season. He wants eight interceptions.
“I figured the last time I played free safety, I had five,’’ Godfrey said. “I think I’m wiser now and understand the game a little bit more. I think that will lead to more interceptions.’’
Godfrey is elated about moving back to free safety on a full-time basis after spending most of the last two seasons playing strong safety. It was in 2010 that Godfrey last played exclusively at free safety and he produced five interceptions. Godfrey said the move will allow him to put his skills as a ball hawk to better use.
Godfrey is the only player in the secondary guaranteed a starting spot. The Panthers are taking a look at a bunch of different players at strong safety and cornerback. That’s led to talk that Carolina’s secondary could be a liability, but Godfrey doesn’t see it that way.
“A lot of people rave about our D-line,’’ Godfrey said. “Our D-line is good and you’re never going to hear me take anything away from that. Our secondary, we have some moving parts and people are moving around. I’m moving back to free safety and I feel like that’s a great opportunity for me. I think we have talent at the other positions and guys are starting to step up. I think our secondary will be just fine. I think this defense has a chance to be great.’’
