Locker Room Buzz: Tampa Bay Buccaneers
By Pat Yasinskas
ATLANTA -- Observed in the locker room after the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ 31-23 loss to the Atlanta Falcons:
Injury updates: Running back Doug Martin was seen in the locker room with his arm in a sling. Martin suffered a shoulder injury in the third quarter and did not return. Coach Greg Schiano and Martin said the shoulder will be evaluated further when the team returns to Tampa. Safety Dashon Goldson suffered a leg injury. Schiano said he didn’t know any more details on the severity of the injury.
Why kick? Schiano explained his decision to kick a field goal on a fourth-and-goal from the Atlanta 23-yard line with five minutes left instead of going for a touchdown. Schiano said the down and distance weren’t favorable, and he chose to try to set up a situation in which the Bucs could tie the game with two possessions.
Don't ask me: None of Schiano’s players questioned the call to kick the field goal, but wide receiver Mike Williams had the best quote: “I just block, catch balls and try to get touchdowns. That’s my job. I can’t make the calls. That was his call and that was the right call for him at that time.’’
