Falcons to face Lions in London in 2014

By Vaughn McClure

The Atlanta Falcons already knew they were going to host a game in London next season. Now they know the opponent.

The NFL announced Thursday that the Falcons will face Calvin Johnson and Detroit Lions at Wembley Stadium in 2014. It is one of three games in London, along with the Jaguars-Cowboys and Raiders-Dolphins.

"We are excited and honored to serve as ambassadors for our city, our state, and the National Football League," Falcons owner and chairman Arthur Blank said after the London game was announced. "Playing in London will provide tremendous exposure to our team, as well as provide the opportunity to showcase the great international city of Atlanta. We are looking forward to representing the NFL on a global stage by playing in historic Wembley Stadium in what we are sure will be an entertaining game for NFL fans everywhere."

The Falcons are 12-23 against the Lions but have won three in a row in the series. Last season, Matt Ryan threw for 279 yards and four touchdowns in a 31-18 win at Detroit's Ford Field. Roddy White caught eight passes for 153 yards and two scores in the contest.

Johnson had 11 catches for 225 yards for the Lions.

The date of the London game is to be determined.

This season, the Falcons play the Buffalo Bills in Toronto on Dec. 1.
