WATFORD, England -- The New Orleans Saints changed countries -- and punters -- overnight.
New punter Ben Graham met the team shortly after the Saints arrived in London this morning. The Saints released punter Steve Weatherford in a move that was in the making for several weeks. Coach Sean Payton said the Saints weren't pleased with Weatherford's lack of consistency and said the team had been looking into making a move for several weeks.
"One of the challenges of playing here during a normal work week, which this is, is any type of roster move or transaction involves the potential for a player flying in with a passport,'' Payton said. "Things that you would normally do at home on a Tuesday or Wednesday on a spur of the moment becomes a little bit more planned here. I just felt it was the right thing to do rather than fly Steve over and turn around and send him back. Ben was able to come on a flight separate from the team.''
Graham, who spent the previous two seasons with the New York Jets, also had an advantage over some of the other punters the Saints might have considered. As a native of Australia, Graham had a current passport and was able to hop on a plane quickly.
