Darrelle Revis won't be stuck in Tampa 2

By Pat Yasinskas

TAMPA, Fla. -- On the day he officially was introduced as the coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Lovie Smith had a message for star cornerback Darrelle Revis.

"There's a reason why we have Tampa 2 associated to one of our coverages," Smith said. "But I just want you to know -- and especially Darrelle Revis -- that we don't play Cover 2 every snap, all right? We have a place for a great cover corner that's physical and can do all things."

There had been speculation that Smith and Revis would clash based on the perception that the coach prefers to play zone coverage. While it's true Smith has a long history in the Tampa 2 system, he veered from that at times in his later years as the head coach of the Chicago Bears.

Smith's not dumb. He knows he has a unique talent in Revis and he's going to use him wisely.

"There's a reason why Darrelle Revis is one of the best football players in this game," Smith said. "We're excited about getting our hands on him and putting him in a position to make plays."
