Panthers loading up at skill positions

The Carolina Panthers suddenly have become the story of the night in the NFC South. They just traded up to No. 89 overall to take Appalachian State’s Armanti Edwards.

He was a quarterback in college, but he’s viewed as a receiver and maybe a return man in the NFL. Besides, the Panthers already took quarterback Jimmy Clausen in the second round. They also got receiver Brandon LaFell in the second round. LaFell is likely to get a shot at the starting job opposite Steve Smith.

Edwards probably will take a little time to develop into a receiver, but he could be a useful situational player right off the bat.

By the way, the Panthers gave up their second-round pick in 2011 to New England for the chance to take Edwards. Not a surprise that coach John Fox and general manager Marty Hurney are going for broke because they’re probably gone if they don’t win this season.
