Aaron Ekblad agrees to 8-year, $60M extension with Panthers

Defenseman Aaron Ekblad and the Florida Panthers have agreed to an eight-year, $60 million extension, according a report in the Miami Herald.

The deal cannot be signed until noon on Friday when NHL free agency begins.

The extension will not kick in until the 2017-18 season, following Ekblad's final year of the three-year entry-level deal he signed after being the top overall pick in the 2014 NHL draft.

Ekblad, 20, won the Calder Trophy for the league's top rookie in 2015 and has been one of Florida's top defensemen since entering the league.

Last year Ekblad had 15 goals and 21 assists in 78 regular season games.
