But recent medical exams determined Fletcher has only one kidney.
"He has one kidney and the one kidney he has needs some work,'' coach Sean Payton told the media Monday. "That becomes an immediate stop to playing football. I think he's going to be done playing football."
The Saints placed Fletcher on the reserve/retired list. They signed center Digger Bujnoch to fill his roster spot. Bujnoch previously has spent time with the Giants and Bengals and is the son of former NFL lineman Glenn Bujnoch.
