The Tampa Bay Buccaneers just announced a bunch of roster moves. The biggest name on the list was cornerback Ashton Youboty, who was released.

He was signed during camp when the Bucs had some injuries in the secondary. But he also was viewed as possible insurance if Aqib Talib was suspended. The team said Saturday night it has been told by the NFL that Talib will not be suspended during the 2011 season, so that made Youboty expendable.

The Bucs also waived receiver Aundrae Allison, cornerback Vince Anderson, tight end Collin Franklin, defensive end Brandon Gilbeaux, receiver Detron Lewis, punter Robert Malone, receiver Jock Sanders, and fullback Rendrick Taylor. They also waived/injured guard Brandon Carter.

Jevan Snead back with Buccaneers

Tampa Bay fans, go ahead and buy your tickets for Dallas, site of this season’s Super Bowl. Yes, the Buccaneers officially have announced the signing of quarterback Jevan Snead.

Yep, bringing back an undrafted rookie who was cut on the first day of training camp really should put the Bucs over the top. In all seriousness, this is a move of necessity. With starter Josh Freeman out for the rest of the preseason, the Bucs need a third quarterback just to get through practices.

The only other quarterbacks on the roster are Josh Johnson and Rudy Carpenter, and Johnson’s ticketed as the backup for the regular season. I doubt Snead’s going to do anything to shake up the depth chart, but he’ll come in and serve a purpose for a couple of weeks. Johnson and Carpenter haven’t looked bad in the preseason, but I think the injury to Freeman exposes a potential huge flaw for the Bucs.

All indications are Freeman will be ready for the start of the regular season. But there’s a big drop-off from Freeman to Johnson and Carpenter. I know the Bucs didn’t want any sort of quarterback controversy because Freeman is the franchise.

But, as other teams trim their rosters in the coming weeks, I’d like to see the Bucs add a quarterback with at least a little experience. If Freeman’s injury lingers or he gets hurt again, the Bucs would be in huge trouble. Do you really want to see a depth chart that’s filled by Johnson, Carpenter and Snead?

In other news, the Bucs also announced they have signed defensive end George Johnson, whom they previously cut. They also waived/injured defensive end Brandon Gilbeaux.
