The New Orleans Saints took another step toward getting under the salary cap Friday by restructuring the contract of wide receiver Marques Colston, sources confirmed to ESPN Saints reporter Mike Triplett.
The story was first reported by Fox Sports.
The Saints were about $15 million over the cap. The exact terms of Colston's restructuring weren't known immediately, but it likely will save the Saints several million dollars. Colston had been scheduled to count $9.7 million toward this year's cap.
Colston, 31, is the Saints' career receiving leader, with 666 catches for 9,239 yards over nine seasons. His production has dipped in the past three years, but he is still a productive player. Last season, he had 59 catches for 902 yards and five touchdowns.
