NFC South: Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference

With the Carolina Panthers (signing Jeremy Shockey) and the New Orleans Saints (re-signing Pierre Thomas) making most of the noise in the NFC South on Thursday, we haven’t forgotten about the Atlanta Falcons.

They didn’t do anything near the Shockey or Thomas level, but they just announced a couple of minor roster moves. They re-signed offensive tackle Will Svitek and punter Ken Parrish.

Svitek’s been a decent backup for the Falcons the past two seasons. He’s appeared in 29 games and made two starts at left tackle.

I don’t know much about Parish, who has bounced around the NFL the last few years, but I see one thing in his background that I like. He’s a product of East Stroudsburg University. Some of you might never have heard of East Stroudsburg University, but I grew up in Pennsylvania, in a town about 45 miles from East Stroudsburg, which, believe it or not, is just a little east of Stroudsburg. Both 'Burgs are known more for ski resorts than anything.

Anyway, there’s a little NFC South history here that Parish now adds to. East Stroudsburg University is a Division II state school in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference. The NFC South has had some pretty good luck with players from the PSAC programs.

The Falcons previously found cornerback Brent Grimes at Shippensburg University and the New Orleans Saints found one of the all-time great steals when they drafted guard Jahri Evans out of Bloomsburg University.
