For the second straight week, the New Orleans Saints have the league’s worst defense.

The NFL just sent out its Week 3 statistics, which don’t include the Monday night game. The Saints are No. 32 in total defense. They’re No. 32 against the pass and No. 25 against the run.

Two other NFC South teams are faring poorly in total defense.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are No. 26 in total defense. They are No. 2 against the run, but their pass defense, which is No. 32, drags down their overall ranking.

The Carolina Panthers are No. 24 in total defense (No. 26 against the run and No. 18 against the pass).

The Atlanta Falcons are the division’s only team with a respectable defensive ranking. The Falcons are No. 13 overall (24th against the run and No. 8 against the pass).
We probably didn’t need the NFL to tell us this because it was pretty obvious.

But the league just made it official that the New Orleans Saints have the league’s worst defense. The NFL just put out its release ranking offense and defense through Sunday’s games and the picture isn’t pretty for the Saints.

They’re No. 32 in overall defense. They’re No. 32 against the run and they’re tied for No. 26 against the pass.

And the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are right behind them. The Bucs are No. 31 overall. They’re No. 32 against the pass and No. 3 against the run.

The Atlanta Falcons play Monday night, so their ranking is based only on what they did in the season opener against Kansas City. The Falcons are ranked No. 22 overall (No. 29 against the run and No. 18 against the pass).

Barely, Carolina has the only NFC South defense in the top 20. The Panthers are No. 19 overall (No. 27 against the run and No. 13 against the pass).

Offensively, the NFC South teams rank much better, with three in the top 10.

The Saints are No. 3 overall (tied for third in passing and No. 19 in rushing). The Panthers are No. 8 overall (tied for No. 11 in rushing and No. 8 in passing). The Falcons are No. 10 overall (25th in rushing and fifth in passing).

Tampa Bay is No. 29 in total offense. The Bucs are No. 29 in passing and tied for 15th in rushing.

Now that the Monday night game is over, let’s take a look at the updated NFL rankings for NFC South offenses and defenses.

Let’s start with the Saints because they have the league’s No. 1-rated offense overall. The Saints are No. 1 in passing and No. 13 in rushing. Defensively, the Saints are No. 20 overall (19th against the run and 19th against the pass).

The Carolina Panthers are the other NFC South team with a top-five offense. They’re No. 5 overall (seventh in rushing and ninth in passing). But Carolina’s defense hasn’t been nearly as good. The Carolina defense is No. 27 overall (30th against the run and No. 17 against the pass).

Atlanta might be the division’s most balanced team in these rankings. The Falcons are No. 12 in total offense (11th in rushing and 10th in passing). On defense, they’re No. 15 overall (No. 2 against the run and No. 26 against the pass).

Although Tampa Bay’s offense has been inconsistent all season, it’s much better than the defense. The Bucs are No. 16 in total offense. They’re tied for No. 23 in rushing and are No. 13 in passing. On defense, the Bucs are No. 31 overall (26th against the run and 29th against the pass).
