One of the main reasons Tampa Bay running back Doug Martin is having such a strong rookie year is that he rarely goes down the first time he’s touched.
According to ESPN Stats & Information, Martin ranks third in the NFL with 376 yards coming after first contact. Only Adrian Peterson (544) and Marshawn Lynch (411) have gained more yards after contact. Of Martin’s 862 rushing yards, 43.6 percent have come after contact.
Martin easily outpaces the rest of the NFC South running backs in this category. Atlanta’s Michael Turner is No. 13 in the NFL with 248 yards after contact. Turner is averaging just 1.8 yards after contact.
New Orleans’ Pierre Thomas is No. 29 with 160 yards after contact and teammate Mark Ingram is No. 31 with 126 yards. Carolina’s Jonathan Stewart is No. 36 with 114 yards and teammate DeAngelo Williams rounds out the top 40 with 106 yards.
