Training camp and the exhibition season were supposed to give the Seattle Seahawks a chance to try out new receiver Percy Harvin, new pass-rush options and an offensive line featuring a healthy James Carpenter.
Injuries have changed those plans as the Thursday night exhibition opener against San Diego approaches.
2012 Sack Totals for Current Seahawks
Harvin is expected to miss most of the regular season following hip surgery. Pass-rushing addition Cliff Avril is dealing with a hamstring injury and might not return until next week. Carpenter suffered a foot injury Monday. Coach Pete Carroll told reporters Carpenter probably will not play against the Chargers.
The Seahawks are counting on Chris Clemons, Bruce Irvin and Avril to bolster their pass-rush in 2013. All three are dealing with injuries. Another key pass-rusher, Michael Bennett, limped away from a drill at one point Tuesday, but he apparently was OK.
More than a month remains until the regular season, so there is time.
Clemons could return by then, beating expectations for a player coming off an ACL surgery in January. Avril could return from his hamstring injury next week. Irvin's timetable for return from a groin injury is less important because a suspension will sideline him for the first four games regardless. Still, the team would like to try him out at linebacker in a preseason environment.
