A weekly examination of the 49ers' ESPN.com Power Ranking:
Preseason ranking: 3 | Last Week: 1 | ESPN.com Power Ranking since 2002
How many teams can lose by 26 points and still be ranked No. 3 in the NFL? That’s the good news. It’s also a sign of respect and a nice reminder that the end of the season is a ways off after a Week 2 stumble.
The bad news is the San Francisco 49ers are clearly behind the Seattle Seahawks at this point. The Seahawks are now ranked No. 1 after crushing the 49ers in Seattle on Sunday night. Going into the game, the 49ers held the top spot with the Seahawks at No. 2.
Sandwiched between the two NFC West rivals are the Denver Broncos. They have been the most dominant team in the NFL in the first eighth of the season. But I guess the Seahawks got the nod from our panel of voters because of their big win over the No. 1 team. I can’t argue that.
The 49ers will likely hang around the top five all season. But if they want to get back on top, they are going to have to work out the things that failed them offensively at Seattle.
