A weekly examination of the 49ers' ESPN.com Power Ranking:

Preseason: 3 | Last Week: 6 | ESPN.com Power Ranking since 2002

It’s funny how things work.

The 49ers blew out opponents in back-to-back weeks by a combined score of 73-27, yet they stayed at No. 6 in the ESPN.com Power Rankings. This week, the 49ers moved into the top five after a bye week.

The reason is the logjam above the 49ers loosened a bit with New Orleans losing. The Saints are now No. 6.

A huge game at New Orleans looms for the 49ers in Week 11 following this week's test against Carolina, which has blown out four straight opponents.

There is no doubt the 49ers belong as a top-five team. They have won five straight games and none of the games have been close. Still, the bye-week rise will mean nothing to San Francisco if it stumbles in the two big games that are approaching.
