The 49ers will face Kurt Warner and Warner's former understudy in consecutive weeks after the Rams named Marc Bulger their starter against San Francisco in Week 11. Warner gets the start for Arizona tonight. Bulger starts for the Rams at Candlestick Park on Sunday.
Bulger's continued status as the starter was the primary revelation from Jim Haslett's news conference with reporters in St. Louis one day after the team suffered a 47-3 defeat against the Jets. Any of us could easily make a case for benching Bulger, but it's tougher making a case for playing any of the other candidates. The organization simply has too much invested in Bulger to give up on him with seven games remaining in the season.
On a side note, Haslett said left tackle Orlando Pace wasn't to blame for a fumble-forcing blind-side hit on Bulger. The Jets' Abram Elam had a free shot on Bulger around the edge after Pace blocked to the inside without seeming to notice the blitzing safety. The play illustrated why I'm often reluctant to assign blame for sacks without investigating them.
Here's what Haslett told reporters when asked about the play: "That's on Marc. They took the protection out the other way. Marc has that guy. Marc has to get rid of the ball."
