INDIANAPOLIS -- The earlier notes about coach Mike Singletary's apparently stronger commitment to quarterback Alex Smith might need some clarification.
One of our regular blog contributors, Bcook122, read between the lines and put it this way in the comments section of this item: "I'm OK with Alex Smith until I'm not."
That's how I see things.
The 49ers are committed to Smith until they are not. We shouldn't imply that teams are making long-term commitments to quarterbacks by naming them starters unless those quarterbacks have long-term contracts with enough guaranteed money to provide security.
Smith's contract runs through the 2010 season and the team apparently has no immediate plans to offer a lucrative long-term deal.
That tells us what we need to know. When in doubt, consult the money.
