The 49ers' interest in free-agent quarterback David Carr begs the question, "Why?"
CarrThe team might feel as though Carr would fit its offense better than current backup Shaun Hill now that San Francisco is incorporating more downfield throws to Vernon Davis and eventually Michael Crabtree. I also think a No. 1 overall draft choice such as Carr can appeal to personnel people. They see raw talent as potential.
Why not Carr?
One of the knocks on him from his days in Houston was that he lacked natural leadership skills. He was a good person and had some talent, but he didn't quite connect with teammates. Players weren't inclined to rally around him.
That's been the knock on 49ers starter Alex Smith as well.
The big difference with Carr is that the 49ers presumably would be signing him as a backup. They wouldn't be committing their franchise to him. That's important to keep in mind when evaluating the move.
