Derek Anderson's immediate fate could hinge on which offer, if any, Charlie Whitehurst accepts from the Cardinals or Seahawks.
Such fuss over Whitehurst seems a bit improbable given that he is not even a No. 2 quarterback. The Chargers' third-stringer has never attempted a pass in a regular-season game.
Matt Schaub had attempted 161 regular-season passes for the Falcons, with mixed results, when the Texans acquired him as their starter before the 2007 season. While the Cardinals and Seahawks would not be making a similar leap with Whitehurst -- Schaub received starting money from Houston as part of his trade -- I was interested in comparing their preseason numbers. Schaub became a test case for promising quarterbacks acquired somewhat blindly.
In Whitehurst's case, there isn't much more to go on. Arizona should be more appealing to him, I would think, because there's no chance the Cardinals will select a franchise quarterback early in the draft. Also, the Seahawks appear more strongly committed to Matt Hasselbeck than the Cardinals are to Matt Leinart.
If neither scenario appealed, Whitehurst could always just re-sign with San Diego and take his chances next offseason.
