The economics are there to back up the claim, but it's also true that the top picks produce the most acclaimed players, even if teams pay exorbitantly near the top.
The chart, compiled using information from ESPN Stats & Information, shows how many Pro Bowl players teams have drafted in various pick ranges since 2000. The last column attempts to better define prime quality by singling out only players with at least three Pro Bowl honors during the period.
Teams drafting among the top 20 overall choices have selected 29 players with at least three Pro Bowls on their NFL résumés. Teams drafting after the 20th overall choice have found 19 such players.
