San Francisco 49ers coach Mike Singletary offers thoughts on rookie hazing, quarterback Alex Smith, the Arizona Cardinals without Kurt Warner and the possibility of an 18-game regular season during his visit Tuesday with ESPN's Colin Cowherd.

Singletary sounds increasingly comfortable handling media responsibilities as a head coach. That has come from experience. It's also easier during the offseason, when everyone is a little more relaxed.

Cowherd: Was there a sigh of relief when Kurt Warner retired -- a little sigh, maybe, Mike?

Singletary: Not at all. Not at all. It's not that I'm sitting here saying that I don't respect his talent. He is a tremendous talent. But I think, when I look at the Arizona Cardinals, they are a heckuva football team. Ken Whisenhunt and his staff have done an outstanding job. But I don't sit back and spend time thinking about the Arizona Cardinals or anybody else, as a matter of fact. I think it's so important for us to focus on the 49ers and the areas in which we need to get better to compete -- not just against the Arizona Cardinals, but against anybody -- and make sure that we are prepare to go toe-to-toe and hold or own, if not take it to the next level against anyone we play. That is our focus during the offseason going into this season.
