TAMPA, Fla. -- The Cardinals are probably getting more from running back Edgerrin James after benching him during the regular season. I know they're getting more from quarterback Kurt Warner after withholding the starting job from him until right before the regular season.

Jeffri Chadiha touches on that subject as it relates to James. For Warner, spending the offseason as the backup forced him to pay closer attention to issues the coaching staff wanted him to emphasize. Ball security was the No. 1 issue.

We can quantify Warner's progress in this area by dividing pass plays (attempts plus sacks) by turnovers (interceptions plus lost fumbles).

Warner averaged one interception or lost fumble for every 29.7 pass plays this season, down from one every 20.5 pass plays in 2007. The 2008 ratio was the best for Warner since his generally misunderstood 2004 season with the Giants, when he suffered one turnover every 39.5 pass plays. Warner's career average is one turnover for every 24.6 pass plays.
