Reading between lines on Ted Ginn Jr.

8/17/2010

The San Francisco 49ers expect to be without promising rookie return specialist Kyle Williams for the next couple weeks and possibly longer after Williams suffered a toe injury. That would seem to mean more return work for veteran receiver Ted Ginn Jr., but that might not be the case.

"I'm not quite sure if we’ll do that," coach Mike Singletary told reporters Monday. "We may look at Ted a little bit more at that position, but we’ve got some other guys on our team that can do it, so we’ll just see how it goes."

Was Singletary questioning Ginn's ability as a returner? I think not. More likely, Ginn has shown enough promise as a wide receiver for the 49ers to value his contributions in that capacity -- to the point that the team might not want him serving as a full-time returner. Ginn was quite impressive in the 49ers practices I attended earlier in camp. The speed he offers the offense isn't something the 49ers can get from another player, but they might be able to find someone else to handle some of the returns.
