INDIANAPOLIS -- Niners coach Mike Singletary and general manager Scot McCloughan have finished back-to-back extended sessions with reporters at the combine.
Lots of ground to cover here. A quick overview before we elaborate:
- The 49ers hope to add a running back weighing between 215 and 230 pounds to reduce the workload on Frank Gore. They expect to find this player in the draft. They think the depth at running back is very good in the draft. If they find such a player in the draft, as expected, DeShaun Foster presumably would not return.
- The 49ers like the depth at receiver in the draft. That could spell the end in San Francisco for Bryant Johnson, although the 49ers have not ruled out a return.
- Isaac Bruce is welcome to return. The 49ers have had discussions with him. McCloughan put the odds of a return at 50-50.
- The 49ers will eventually release tackle Jonas Jennings, but they are in no hurry. They want to make sure the timing is right medically -- Jennings is rehabbing from injury -- and they want to make sure they make any move with Jennings fully apprised. McCloughan said this move would not be made "in the papers". He laughed when I asked if it would be made on Web sites. Ha ha.
- I'll have more on the situation at free safety in a few minutes. Interesting exchange there.
