The Cardinals invested the eighth overall choice of the 2005 NFL draft in a cornerback. Or so they thought. Antrel Rolle made the conversion to safety, a position NFL teams value less than cornerback, but he is playing under the contract he signed as a potentially elite cornerback.
The lesson seems relevant again after Ohio State cornerback Malcolm Jenkins posted disappointing times in the 40-yard dash at the combine. Scouts timed Jenkins between 4.52 and 4.59 seconds in separate 40-yard dashes.
Rolle covered 40 yards in 4.48 seconds at his pro day in 2005, according to NFL Draft Scout. The 40-yard times aren't everything, but they can be important for cornerbacks.
Jenkins' times do not appear fast enough to cement his status as a player the Seahawks might consider as early as the fourth overall choice. I base that on perceptions heading into the combine, not what anyone affiliated with the Seahawks has told me.
