No shock if NFC West fares well Sunday

PHOENIX -- The New Orleans Saints barely beat the Minnesota Vikings, San Francisco 49ers and Carolina Panthers this season.

Those teams have a combined 1-7 record, not counting defeats to the Saints.

The one winning team New Orleans faced this season -- Atlanta -- defeated the Saints in the Superdome.

My point: Yes, the Arizona Cardinals have issues, but it's hardly a shock if they beat the Saints at University of Phoenix Stadium on Sunday. More broadly, it's no shock if the NFC West posts a 2-1 or 3-0 record outside the division in Week 5. The St. Louis Rams have a legitimate shot at Detroit, the only place they won last season, and the 49ers are beyond due for a breakthrough when Philadelphia visits Candlestick Park in the Sunday night game.

The chart shows NFC West team records outside the division this season.
