RENTON, Wash. -- All four NFC West teams opened minicamps Friday. I'm at Seahawks camp and about to speak with newly signed linebacker Leroy Hill.
In Santa Clara, Calif., Matt Maiocco says 49ers quarterback Alex Smith feels good about his surgically repaired shoulder. Smith is practicing. Also, general manager Scot McCloughan says the team has not spoken with the Panthers about Julius Peppers or the Ravens about Terrell Suggs.
In Tempe, Ariz., Kent Somers says linebacker Karlos Dansby "trotted" onto the field with five minutes remaining in practice. Are we really to believe Dansby was the only player who thought practice was beginning later in the day? Then again, Dansby stood nothing to gain by showing up late.
At Rams Park near St. Louis, first-round choice Jason Smith opened at right tackle with the second team, Jim Thomas notes. Looks like the Rams will bring along Smith slowly, to say the least. Also, new receiver Laurent Robinson dropped passes while cornerbacks Ron Bartell and Tye Hill had some problems in coverage.
The most important thing to remember during these camps: It's only May. Now is the time to get a feel for teams and players without reading too much into what happens during practice.
