Mike Martz became a believer in quarterback Shaun Hill? That's what the 49ers' former offensive coordinator told reporters during an NFL Network conference call Tuesday, as Matt Maiocco of the Santa Rosa Press-Democrat relays.
Martz: "Shaun surprised me when he played, with the things he can do. He sees things and can digest things as a quarterback at the snap much better than he appeared to do during practice. I don't think you have to make any concessions with him. I was amazed and impressed with him coming down the stretch last year, and I was kind of tentative about him -- wasn't real sure. The more he played, the more a fan and believer he made of me."Martz basically affirmed what we thought about Hill. Shaky in practice, better in games, more effective than one might realize. Among the quarterbacks with lower passer ratings than Hill last season: Eli Manning, Donovan McNabb, Jay Cutler, Jake Delhomme, Brett Favre and Ben Roethlisberger. Yet, I think quite a few of us would be surprised if Hill sustained such efficiency through a full season. As Martz suggests, perhaps we shouldn't sell Hill short.
