An upset if 49ers run 60 percent of time

San Francisco 49ers offensive coordinator Jimmy Raye caught my attention Tuesday when he said the team would strive for a 60-40 ratio of runs to passes. Here is the reality: No team in the league ran the ball more than 56 percent of the time last season. The 49ers ran it 41.3 percent of the time, the ninth-lowest ratio in the league.

The Ravens, Falcons, Panthers, Titans and Vikings were the only teams to run the ball at least 50 percent of the time last season.

We know this: The 49ers will run the ball more than 41.3 percent of the time unless Mike Martz steals Raye's headset on game days. They have been big on establishing a physical mindset predicated on a power running game. Raye and the offense will think like a team that runs the ball 60 percent of the time. They will protect the football much more diligently after finishing last season with a minus-17 turnover differential, tied with Denver for worst in the league.
