NFL teams are learning new guidelines for practices on the fly.
The Seattle Seahawks canceled their afternoon practice on short notice Saturday after realizing they couldn't practice twice in one day, even in shorts, lightweight shoulder pads ("shells") and helmets. The team instead held a walk-through practice with no pads or helmets. Players wore ballcaps and there was no contact.
The Seahawks were scheduled to hold one full-pads practice Sunday, but with players still acclimating to contact following the lockout, coach Pete Carroll put into place a few restrictions. Seattle practiced in helmets, full-sized shoulder pads and shorts.
Meanwhile, the San Francisco 49ers released a statement Sunday night announcing plans to cancel practice Monday. The decision helped them abide by new rules limiting how many days in a row teams can practice. The 49ers now appear more likely to add a practice for Wednesday where there was none scheduled previously.
I've adjusted travel plans accordingly.
My original plan called for traveling to see the 49ers for practices Monday and Tuesday before heading to Arizona Cardinals camp. I'm now scheduled to visit Cardinals camp for all practices scheduled Wednesday through Friday. I'll book a trip to 49ers camp once the team's practice plans become more clear.
Plans to visit the St. Louis Rams have not changed. I'll be at their camp for an extended stretch beginning around Aug. 15.
