An NFL head coach might normally be irate with his staff if only 10 players made it onto the field for a given play.
And if only eight made it out there? Someone might want to update his resume.
The second half of the fourth and final preseason game carries a different mindset. That is why Arizona Cardinals coach Ken Whisenhunt kept his emotions in check when only eight players -- seven rushers and one guy just standing there off to the side -- made it onto the field to defend a Denver Broncos field-goal try Thursday night.
Mike Prater missed the 60-yard attempt on the second-to-last play of the third quarter.
"I was biting my tongue as it was happening," Whisenhunt told reporters after the game. "I was just thinking, 'Fourth preseason game, [almost] fourth quarter.' They didn’t know what they were doing. It was tough, but I’ll let it slide this time."
