The Cardinals announced their 2008 team captains today. I've compiled a list of captains from around the division.

Most are self-explanatory. The 49ers named cornerback Walt Harris as captain based on his role as a liaison to the NFL Players Association. Harris is also a defensive leader.

The 49ers' Patrick Willis commands more respect than the typical second-year player. He dominated as a rookie and has already become one of the best linebackers in the league -- regardless of age.

The Cardinals' selection of left guard Reggie Wells speaks to the respect he commands as one of their better players. I named Wells to our preseason all-division team. Seattle's Mike Wahle has impressed as the Seahawks' new left guard, but Wells is established in the division and often overlooked.

Arizona named only one defensive captain, choosing Karlos Dansby over several other veteran candidates, including hard-hitting safety Adrian Wilson.

The Rams' selection of Corey Chavous speaks in part to the veteran safety's smarts. Defensive coordinator Jim Haslett considers Chavous to be a coach on the field. Safeties can hang around longer than some other players because the position rewards those with a feel for the game.
