The Cardinals ranked among the NFL's five most penalized teams in 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008.

They lead the league in penalties through one week this season.

A few more years of this and we might have the makings of a trend.

"I think the important thing is that we clean up some of the mistakes that we made," coach Ken Whisenhunt said Monday. "Twelve penalties, six of them were offsides -- three on offense, three on defense. If we can eliminate those things, which are in our control, then obviously it is a more manageable thing."

The Cardinals suffered a delay-of-game penalty following a timeout Sunday. Officials charged Kurt Warner with eight penalties for delay last season. Matt Leinart suffered two more. Quarterbacks for other NFC West teams combined for five. I don't get it.

For all the Cardinals' penalty problems, the Rams' Richie Incognito remains king among NFC West rule-breakers. He led the division with 13 penalties last season and he leads the division with three after one game.

Most assessed penalties (league rank in parenthesis): Cardinals 12 (1), Rams 10 (2), Seahawks 4 (19), 49ers 4 (19).
