I had a hard time coming up with a scenario after watching the Rams jump to early leads against their last two opponents, only to lose.
The Rams could not have scripted their recent beginnings much better. Two weeks ago, they picked off Tarvaris Jackson's first two passes, turned one of the gifts into a touchdown drive and still lost at home, 24-7. Against Arizona last week, an early punt return for a touchdown staked the Rams to a 7-0 lead, also at home, but they still lost, 23-20.
Going into the season, I questioned whether the 49ers' Alex Smith could make it through a full season healthy. He has held up very well this season. Taking nine sacks against Baltimore last week put him at additional risk for injuries. The Rams' Chris Long has 10 sacks, but I would expect the 49ers' defense and ground game to put Smith in favorable situations Sunday.
Is there any realistic scenario whereby the Rams could win this game?
Bernie Miklasz asked during our weekly conversation on 101ESPN St. Louis whether, and how, the St. Louis Rams could upset the San Francisco 49ers at Candlestick Park in Week 13.
