While Mike Singletary chooses to focus on the players who are there in the 49ers' locker room, the rest of us are free to occasionally swerve into other matters -- such as Michael Crabtree.

ESPN Radio's Jason Smith asked me about that subject and others around the NFC West. The audio evidence is one click away.

We discussed Crabtree, Kurt Warner and Matt Hasselbeck. If he had asked about the Rams, I would have told him they're improving but still lacking in two critical areas: big-play threats in the passing game and strong pass rushers. Receiver Donnie Avery must play better on offense. On defense, Leonard Little is no longer a dominant player (seven sacks in his last 23 games). Chris Long is not yet one and I haven't seen evidence to suggest he'll become one. Long has four sacks in 18 regular-season games.
