SAN FRANCISCO -- Traffic complications around Candlestick Park are preventing even the San Francisco 49ers from reaching the stadium as quickly as anticipated for the NFC Championship Game.
The 49ers' buses are just now nearing the stadium with about three hours until the 3:30 p.m. PT kickoff, according to league officials. I do not have information on the New York Giants' buses. Both had police escorts, but the backups leading to the stadium left little room for maneuvering.
The media bus I'm riding in left the 49ers' team hotel before 11 a.m. PT. Nearly two hours later, we continue to sit in traffic 10-15 blocks from the stadium. The trip would normally take about 10-15 minutes.
I'm told one usual entrance to the stadium was not made available until recently, counter to expectations. But precise details are elusive.
Our bus is now starting to move more quickly. Two police officers just helped the driver navigate a tight turn off Paul Ave. onto 3rd St. Looks like we're on our way.
Here's hoping the players make it there in time to prepare themselves properly. The game is about them, after all.
