Alex Smith's Bay Area credentials keep getting stronger.

The San Francisco 49ers' quarterback, under NFL orders to stop wearing a San Francisco Giants cap to postgame news conferences or risk a $15,000 fine, is getting support from the NL West leaders.

Bruce Bochy, the Giants' manager, wore a 49ers cap during his pregame news conference Thursday.

"Alex supported us, so I'm going to support him," Bochy said, according to the San Jose Mercury News. "They're a great club and I'm honored to wear it."

From the NFL rulebook:
"Throughout the period on game-day that a player is visible to the stadium and television audience (including in pregame warm-ups, in the bench area, and during postgame interviews in the locker room or on the field), players are prohibited from wearing, displaying, or orally promoting equipment, apparel, or other items that carry commercial names or logos of companies, unless such commercial identification has been approved in advance by the League office."

That policy would seem to apply. I'll update if I find out otherwise.

Everyone sees this policy as 100 percent reasonable, right?
