Silver linings: 49ers at Vikings

The facts: The San Francisco 49ers fell to 2-1 with a 24-13 defeat to the Minnesota Vikings at the Metrodome.

The upside: Even the worst defeats tend to feature a bright spot or two.

  • Tight end Vernon Davis caught his fourth touchdown pass in three games this season.

  • The 49ers converted 40 percent of their third-down conversion chances.

  • San Francisco scored on three of its first five possessions. The 49ers appeared close to scoring on a fourth until the Vikings blocked a field-goal attempt in the second quarter.

  • Linebacker NaVorro Bowman was credited with 18 tackles.

  • Kyle Williams had kickoff returns covering 93 and 50 yards.

  • Coach Jim Harbaugh was able to coax a fourth timeout from replacement officials.

  • This is only the fifth "Silver Linings" file for the 49ers since Harbaugh became coach. We had to strong-arm the 49ers logo into appearing within this item. It agreed on one condition: that we agreed not to mention Frederick P. Soft.

Looking ahead: The 49ers visit the New York Jets in Week 4.
