Blitzing Kurt Warner carries risks, but the alternative isn't always very palatable, either.
The chart shows how Warner performed during the Cardinals' 24-17 victory over the Giants depending on how many pass rushers New York sent his way.
The numbers, compiled by ESPN Stats & Information, show Warner as far more effective when the Giants rushed four or fewer defenders. Why wouldn't the Giants blitz more frequently? It's a subject we discussed here last week.
Watching this game on a hotel TV made it impossible for me to chart personnel in real time.
However, ESPN Stats & Information charted Beanie Wells' production based on whether he had company in the backfield. Wells carried eight times for 52 yards, one touchdown and three first downs from two-back sets. He carried six times for 15 yards and one first down as the lone back.
Fullback Dan Kreider threw some effective blocks. His presence in the backfield usually means taking a wide receiver off the field. Anquan Boldin's injury situation makes that option more attractive at times. I'll take a longer look at that aspect when reviewing the game, but this was something we have discussed previously (see fourth bulleted item here).
