This is a follow-up to an earlier item about the Rams' offensive personnel use, with specific attention to fullback Mike Karney and tight end Daniel Fells.

The quick summary goes like this: The Rams signed Karney in free agency because they needed a fullback for their West Coast offense. Steven Jackson wholeheartedly embraced the idea. So far, however, the Rams have been more effective putting a second tight end (Fells) on the field instead of the fullback.

The Rams generally use one of these two personnel groups on early downs. The chart shows how much more effective they have been with Fells on the field (Billy Bajema occasionally plays with this group as well). The difference in yards per pass attempt is dramatic.

Here is my theory: The Rams' wide receivers aren't good enough to make the base offense work. Putting a second tight end on the field gives the Rams an additional receiving option, whereas Karney is mostly a blocker.
