The Rams' offensive line pushed around the Lions in the running game Sunday.
One player in particular stood out to me for his improvement. Rookie first-round draft choice Jason Smith appeared more consistent despite allowing a sack. He made some effective blocks in the running game and he seemed to continue making strides in his technique.
During the preseason, Smith often stood too upright in his stance, a reflection of his college experience in a spread offense. He too often lost his balance or missed blocks entirely. That isn't happening much any longer. Smith appeared comfortable and disciplined against the Lions. At one point, a Lions defender jumped offside. Smith stayed in his stance without flinching.
And with the game on the line, Smith helped collapse the left side of the Lions' defense, freeing Steven Jackson for the game-winning touchdown run.
