Colt McCoy's addition to the San Francisco 49ers prompted a quick Twitter response from the verified account associated with Earl Thomas, the Seattle Seahawks' Pro Bowl safety.

"is this a april fools joke," Thomas wrote.

McCoy, a third-round choice of the Cleveland Browns in 2010, has struggled to this point in his career. Thomas, who played with McCoy at the University of Texas, has supported his former teammate in the past -- to an extent that made a dismissive tweet from Thomas seem incongruous. Thomas subsequently tweeted support for McCoy.

"you know I love colt great teammate and great guy," Thomas tweeted. "But still can't believe he is a 49er."

Those comments are consistent with ones Thomas has made about McCoy in the past.

"I'm definitely rooting for him when I'm not playing him," Thomas said of McCoy in 2011 comments appearing in the Akron Beacon Journal. "I want to see him do his best, just not when he’s playing me."

The odds are against McCoy becoming a factor for the 49ers or anyone else, for that matter.

The same was once true for Alex Smith, but the 49ers wound up posting a 19-5-1 record in games he started over the past two seasons. Smith improved as his health improved, and the 49ers eventually won a playoff game with him behind center.

No one should expect McCoy to enjoy a similar revival simply because he also struggled early in his career. Every situation is different. However, as the chart shows, McCoy's numbers through 21 regular-season starts line up favorably to the ones Smith posted through the same point in his career. Perhaps there is still hope for him.
