Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee breaks down Mike Singletary's Monday news conference. Barrows: "Two things jump out from the transcript. The first is that Singletary continues to be dedicated -- very dedicated -- to Alex Smith but still unsure of whether to swing the offense in the direction of the spread."
Matt Maiocco of the Santa Clara Press-Democrat passes along thoughts from Singletary's news conference. Singletary on their offensive philosophy: "I think when you are talking about a team going to the playoffs who hasn't been to the playoffs in seven years, the No. 1 thing you have to have is consistency, and to develop consistency, you have to have a certain number of repetitions in something before you can be successful at something. When Alex drops back and he throws that eight-route or that route where the receiver runs and he comes inside. For him to go back and throw that pass and have confidence that pass is going to be there as he goes back and he's looking at that safety."
Tim Kawakami of the San Jose Mercury News says the 49ers should not blow up their roster.
Clare Farnsworth of seahawks.com says the team isn't sure whether starting safety Deon Grant will remain available after suffering a hand injury. Losing Grant would significantly affect the secondary. Coach Jim Mora: "It is something that could pose a problem. We need to see what the hand specialist says tomorrow. It might be something significant, but it might be something he’s OK with. We’ll see."
Danny O'Neil of the Seattle Times assesses David Hawthorne's value to the Seahawks. On rookie Aaron Curry: "The other reality is that Curry, the rookie who became the highest linebacker to be drafted in nine years when Seattle chose him fourth, has been coming off the field more and more frequently. He is no longer part of Seattle's nickel coverage as Seattle's coaches have sought to reduce his responsibilities to base coverage."
Ryan Divish of the Tacoma News Tribune says Mora took responsibility for the Seahawks' problems.
Steve Kelley of the Seattle Times says the Seahawks should hire Mike Holmgren as their general manager.
Bob McManaman of the Arizona Republic says the Cardinals' Kurt Warner will undergo tests for a possible concussion. McManaman: "If Warner isn't cleared to play for Sunday's game at Tennessee, the Cardinals would turn to Matt Leinart. Whisenhunt, however, seemed optimistic about Warner's health when addressing the media in his weekly Monday news conference. The coach said he and Warner talked extensively during the flight home from St. Louis, where the Cardinals beat the Rams 21-13, and that his quarterback looked and sounded fine."
Kent Somers of the Arizona Republic offers thoughts from Week 11. Somers: "Much of the talk this week will be about the play of Leinart. And that's the way it should be; Leinart hasn't inspired confidence with his play. But it's important to note that he didn't get a lot of help Sunday. The defense let down and allowed a bad Rams team score 10 points in the second half. Tight end Anthony Becht lost a fumble, and the running game stalled. Leinart's teammates could have made it easier for him."
Darren Urban of azcardinals.com says Warner spent Monday serving the homeless. Warner: "You always take it one day at a time, especially with a head injury. I feel pretty good today. I don’t know if I feel 100 percent right now. So that’s how I approach it. We're going to be safe and we’re going to make sure I am good to go before I get back out there. But I feel a lot better today than I did yesterday, and that’s progress."
Jim Thomas of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch details Marc Bulger's injury situation and its ramifications. Thomas: "There are only six games left in the 2009 season, but at this point Spagnuolo said Bulger would not be placed on the injured reserve list. But if Bulger doesn't play again this season, it's possible that the Arizona game was his last as a Ram. Although it's very early in the draft process, the team is already exploring the possibility of taking a quarterback in the 2009 draft. For the immediate future, however, Kyle Boller takes over as the starting quarterback, beginning with Sunday's home game against the Seattle Seahawks. At the moment, rookie Keith Null is the only other healthy quarterback on the roster. Boller took over for Bulger in the third game of this season when Bulger suffered a bruised rotator cuff in his throwing shoulder against Green Bay."
Bryan Burwell of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch says the Rams should proceed with caution in drafting a quarterback.
