The facts: San Francisco lost for the fourth consecutive time, falling 29-17 to the Giants at the Meadowlands.

The upside: Even the worst defeats tend to feature a bright spot or two ...

  • Manny Lawson continued to dominate on special teams, blocking a field goal to set up a 74-yard touchdown return to help prevent a blowout.
  • Linebacker Patrick Willis had nine tackles and three of the 49ers' eight pass breakups.
  • Rookie receiver Josh Morgan continues to make strides. Yes, he dropped a critical pass near the sideline, but he also had a 30-yard touchdown grab after making two 14-yard receptions earlier in the drive. Playing a rookie means taking good with bad.

These silver linings are getting harder to find, particularly without studying the game closely. I broke down the Rams' and Seahawks' offenses in Week 7. I'll get a chance to watch the 49ers on the DVR after returning from St. Louis.
